Generic Cardura Information

Cardura is commonly prescribed as doxazosin and is typically used in the treatment of hypertension. It is also commonly used in the treatment of enlarged prostate. Cardura is used to allow the arteries to relax and allow blood flow improvement. In the case of an enlarged prostate, Cardura relaxes the muscles and allows urine to flow more freely, making urinating less of a struggle. Cardura is a member of the family of medications known as alpha adrenergic blockers.

Cardura is not well tolerated by all patients and some patients may be at a greater risk for health complications related to taking this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes cataract surgery, liver disease, or prostate cancer may not be able to take Cardura or may require careful monitoring while undergoing treatment with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.

Cardura was reviewed and rated a pregnancy risk category C by the American Food and Drug Administration. This means that Cardura has been proven to cause harm or birth defects in developing fetuses. Cardura is not known to pass through breast milk, although it has not been proven safe, either. Cardura is not appropriate for women who are pregnant, nursing, or who may become pregnant.

As with all medications there is a risk of side effects associated with Cardura. Some patients may experience serious side effects including allergic reactions. Swelling of the lips, face, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing are all signs of an allergic reaction and require emergency medical attention without delay. Other serious side effects may include swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet, a painful erection of the penis that lasts for four hours or longer, lightheadedness, fainting, fast heart rate, pounding heart, and uneven heart rate.

Patients are more likely to experience more mild side effects which do not require immediate medical care nor are they urgent in nature. Patients are likely to experience side effects such as headaches, diarrhea, weakness, stomach or abdominal discomfort, or dizziness. These side effects or any additional side effects which a patient find uncomfortable should be reported to the prescribing physician.

Patients should always take the correct and accurate dosage prescribed by the doctor. If the patient misses a dose, the next dose should never be doubled. Rather, patients should take the missed dose when it has been remembered as long as there is ample time before the next dose. If there is not, then the missed dose should be skipped. Taking doses too closely together or taking double doses may result in an overdose, which would require urgent medical assessment. Overdoses often present with symptoms which include drowsiness, fainting, seizures, and convulsions. Patients who miss several consecutive doses should inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any medication, as it may be necessary to titer back up to the regular dose from a smaller dose.

Cardura may interact poorly with other medications and patients should be made aware of their responsibility to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications. This applies to prescription medications, over the counter medications, herbal remedies, and vitamin and energy supplements. Physicians should never prescribe Cardura without a thorough and accurate medical history and medication list. Medications that are known to cause poor interactions with Cardura include medications known to cause drowsiness such as decongestants, cold medicine, muscle relaxants, and narcotic analgesics as well as medications known to cause stomach irritations.

Patients often complain of feeling dizzy upon waking. This may occur when starting Cardura or when altering the dosage. Patients who have missed a few doses and then begin taking Cardura again often feel dizzy after their dose.
