Singulair is generically prescribed as montelukast and is commonly used to treat allergies and prevent asthma attacks. Singulair is part of the family of medications known as leukotriene inhibitor, which means they affect the leukotreines in the body which produce the airway constriction, inflammation, and fluid build up that occur when a patient is experiencing an asthma attack. Generic Singulair Information

Singulair is not an effective medication for treating an existing asthma attack.

Patients with liver disease may not be able to tolerate Singulair, or may require careful monitoring while taking Singulair, depending on the severity of the disease. Some patients with liver disease require only an adjustment of the typical dosage.

The American Food and Drug Administration rated Singulair a category B pregnancy risk. Singulair is not expected to cause harm or birth defects to a developing fetus, although the prescribing physician should thoroughly discuss the risks and benefits before prescribing this medication. It has yet to be determined whether or not Singulair passes through the mother’s breast milk and affects a nursing child.

Patients may experience side effects when taking Singulair. Some side effects may cause serious health complications and require immediate medical assessment. Patients who experience an allergic reaction to Singulair are likely to experience facial swelling (swelling of the tongue, throat, mouth, or lips), difficulty breathing, and hives. Additionally, patients may experience serious side effects which include flu symptoms, pain, rash, open sores, tingling, numbness, unexplained bruising, severe inflammation of the sinuses, or worsening respiratory issues.

The larger percentage of patients do not experience serious side effects and complain of symptoms such as sore throat, fatigue, cough, dizziness, nasal irritation, headaches, heartburn, upset stomach, or stomach pain. Most patients do not find these side effects disturbing enough to discontinue their use of Singulair, although sometimes a dosage adjustment can ease symptoms of side effects.

Singulair should be taken as it has been prescribed by the physician. Patients who miss a dose should take the missed dose when it has been remembered. Doses should not be taken too closely together, therefore if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose the missed dose should be skipped. Patients should never take a double dose of Singulair for any reason as this can lead to an overdose. An overdose is considered a medical emergency and should be responded to with urgent medical care. An overdose may present with a host of symptoms, although historically patients have responded differently, which may include anything from nausea and vomiting to tremors and difficulty breathing.

Patients should never take any additional medications, whether they are prescription, over the counter, or herbal, without first discussing the possible interactions with a health care professional. Singulair presents a risk of drug interactions that can either produce adverse health effects or can eliminate a medication’s ability to work effectively in the body. Medications such as rifampin or phenobarbitol are known to negatively interact with Singulair. The prescribing physician should never prescribe Singulair to a patient without assessing a current medical examination as well as a current list of medications.

In some cases, patients have experienced an increase for their need for their rescue inhalation medications. Patients who either exceed the recommended allowance for daily use for their rescue inhaler or who experience a sudden increase in their need for their asthma medication should seek prompt medical attention. This may be a sign that the Singulair is worsening their asthma symptoms or it could be a prelude to a severe asthma attack.
