Generic Biaxin information

Biaxin can be generically prescribed as clarithromycin, and is commonly used to treat bacterial infections which affect the skin and respiratory system. It can also be used to treat a specific type of stomach ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori, provided it is used in combination with other medications. Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic.

Biaxin is typically prescribed anywhere between 7 and 14 days for infections and longer for stomach ulcers, and patients need to take the medicine for the entire prescription length in order for it to be effective.

Patients taking cisapride, astemizole, ergot medications, pimozide, or terfenadine can not take Biaxin, as it will cause a life threatening interaction consisting of heart rhythm malfunctions and heart rhythm disorders.

Not all patients can take Biaxin, depending on their medical history they may not be able to tolerate it or they may require careful monitoring to prevent further involvement of other medical conditions. Patients with porphyria, liver disease, kidney disease, or a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome are likely to have complications from taking Biaxin.

Rated a category C pregnancy risk by the American Food and Drug Administration, this medication is known to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies. Biaxin should be avoided in women who are pregnant. Biaxin has also been proven to pass through the mother’s breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. This medication should also be avoided in women who are nursing. Biaxin is not approved for children under 6 months of age.

If by chance a dose is missed, the patient should take the dose as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next dose. Doses should not be taken too close together nor should they be doubled up to make up for a missed dose as this can lead to an overdose. An overdose is considered a medical emergency. Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Allergic reactions can happen in patients who have not taken Biaxin before, and rarely in patients who have. An allergic reaction requires immediate medical attention as the symptoms can be quite severe. An allergic reaction will often present with symptoms which include facial swelling (swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat), difficulty breathing, and hives.

Serious side effects have been reported in a small percentage of patients. If a patient experiences a serious side effect it is vital they receive urgent medical attention. Serious side effects may include difficulty hearing, jaundice with nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, and clay colored stools, watery and bloody diarrhea, uneven heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fever with sore throat, headache and a serious peeling or blistering skin rash.

Other side effects are not quite so serious, although they should be reported to the physician to help determine the proper dose of Biaxin. Side effects such as tooth discoloration, mild skin rash, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, dizziness, headache, anxiety, confusion, unpleasant taste in the mouth, mild stomach discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or upset stomach are quite common and are usually harmless.

There are other medications which may interact with Biaxin. The prescribing physician should be assured that patients are not already taking any medications that may interact before prescribing Biaxin. Patients should always check with the doctor before taking any new medication, even over the counter drugs and herbal remedies. Medications that are known to interact with Biaxin include heart rhythm medication, medicine that weaken the immune system, HIV medications, sedatives, seizure medications, cholesterol lowering drugs, Viagra, theophylline, rifabutin, Tritec, fluconazole, omeprazole, bromocriptine, and cilostazole.
