Generic Cozaar information
Cozaar can be generically prescribed as losartan and is generally used in the treatment of hypertension. In some patients with type 2 diabetes, Cozaar is helpful in the treatment of kidney problems. Cozaar has been proven effective at keeping blood vessels relaxed and open to reduce the stress on the heart. It is part of the family medications known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists.
Cozaar is not appropriate for all patients. A physician should never prescribe Cozaar to a patient without a thorough medical evaluation. Patients with a medical history which includes low blood potassium levels, high blood potassium levels, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, or restricted to a low salt diet may or may not be able to tolerate Cozaar. Some patients may simply require careful monitoring while taking Cozaar, depending on the condition, the severity of the condition, and the general health condition of the patient.
Cozaar should not be prescribed to patients who are pregnant or nursing, as the American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication as a pregnancy risk category D. Cozaar has been proven to cause harm of birth defects to an unborn baby. It has yet to be determined whether or not Cozaar passes through the mother’s breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
Cozaar carries a risk of side effects and may present serious side effects for a small percentage of patients. Patients who experience serious side effects generally report symptoms including dry mouth, excessive thirst, confusion, restlessness, drowsiness, muscle pain, weakness, elevated heart rate, increase in urine output, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, lightheadedness, fainting, seizure, slow heart rate, jaundice, swelling, edema, rapid weight gain, as well as allergic reactions. Facial swelling, hives, and difficulty breathing are the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction. Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Most patients experience less serious side effects, including a dry cough, stuffy nose, mild congestion, headache, dizziness, muscle pain or weakness, insomnia, back pain, leg pain, stomach discomfort, mild nausea, and mild diarrhea or vomiting. Side effects like these should be reported to the prescribing physician and may be alleviated by reducing the dosage of Cozaar.
Cozaar should be taken as it has been prescribed by the physician and patients should always consult with the doctor before altering their medication. Patients who accidentally miss a dose of their medication should take it when it is remembered. If it is nearly time for the next scheduled dose the dose should be skipped and the dosing schedule should resume at the next dose.
Cozaar should never be taken in larger doses than prescribed as this may result in an overdose. Overdosing is a medical emergency and if an overdose is suspected, the patient should be taken to the nearest emergency room. An overdose of Cozaar may result in symptoms such as lightheadedness, fainting, elevated heart rate, or decreased heart rate.
Cozaar may cause interactions with other medications. Physicians should never prescribe Cozaar without a thorough medical assessment as well as a current medicine list. Cozaar may interact with medications such as rifampin, additional blood pressure medications, diuretics, celecoxib, fluconazole, aspirin, or NSAID pain relievers. Patients should always inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, regardless of whether the new medications are over the counter, prescription, herbal, or supplemental.
