Generic Dostinex

Dostinex is a type of drug with a generic name of Cabergoline which is purposely used to treat hyperprolactinemic disorders which is caused by pituitary adenomas or idiopathic. It prevents the entry of prolactin secretion into the pituitary gland. It is also used as a good agent in managing prolactinomas in the event that the bromocriptine is not effective. This drug can also be used for other medical conditions.

Dostinex is in a tablet form which can be taken orally ideally after meals because it was clinically proven to be more effective with food. In the case of inhibition of lactation, this medicine should be given to the patient at the earliest day post partum. The safest therapeutic dose is two 0.5 milligrams tablets which is considered as single dose.

For patients with hyperprolactinaemic disorders, the dosage should start at 0.5 milligrams every week which can be divided into two doses. There should be a gradual increase of dosage per week by adding up 0.5 milligrams weekly on a monthly interval until such time that the therapeutic reaction has been reached. The dosage for the therapeutic purpose can be 1 milligram a week which can range from an average of 0.25 milligrams to 2 milligrams a week. In some cases of patients with hyperprolactinaemic disorders, the dosage may reach up to 4.5 milligrams a week.

It is very important that patients should be monitored by doctors as dosage increases to determine if the therapeutic response is improving or not. Monitoring of the patient’s level of serum prolactin should also be done on a monthly interval. This is to determine if the dosage routine has normalized the serum prolactin. The observation period can lasts for two to four weeks.

Before considering treatment by using Dostinex, it is very important to inform your doctor if you have any allergies with any ingredient contained with the drug such as ergotamine. You must also inform your doctor if you are experiencing high blood pressure or you have any history of heart, lung and kidney disorders.

Since drugs are composed of different ingredients, there is a tendency that these ingredients may react once they are mixed or can prevent the effectiveness of the drug. Therefore, you must also inform your doctor if you are presently taking other medicines especially Macrolides, Butyrophenones, phenothiazines, metoclopramide and others.

Most medicines may cause minor or major side effects which depend on the patient. The most common minor side effects of Dostinex include dizziness, headache, constipation, vomiting, nausea, indigestion and can cause you to feel very weak or tired.

Major side effects may include chest pains, hallucinations, rashes, cough, aggression in sex, depression, difficulty in breathing, swelling of hands and other parts of the body. There are other more side effects which you might experience and it is advisable to consult your doctor if you experience or notice any of these side effects.
