Generic Serophene

Serophene is a brand of clomifene citrate, a drug used to treat female infertility. It works on infertility caused by the inability or the reduced ability to release egg cells. It does this by coaxing the body to produce more follicle-stimulating hormone to induce the release of an egg cell during menstruation. It does this by blocking estrogen receptors in the body, thus fooling the body into thinking there is less female hormones than usual. Serophene is available in 50mg tablets.

Serophene dosage is to be determined by your doctor and will vary from woman to woman due to their individual menstrual cycles. She may take 50mg a day for 5 consecutive days as her cycle begins. If no ovulation occurs then she may take 100mg for the 5 days during her next cycle. This is the maximum prescribed dosage and this should only be repeated for no more than 6 cycles.

It is very important to follow the doctor’s instruction very carefully. If you miss a dose, try to take it as soon as possible but if you do forget to take it, double your following dose and proceed to the next one. If you miss more than one dose, contact your doctor regarding the developments.

Do not take this medicine if you have history of depression, ovarian enlargement or cysts, uterine fibroids, liver disease or hormone gland problems in the adrenal, thyroid or pituitary gland. Consult your doctor for alternatives.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding present before treatment may either mean that the uterine lining grows too thick or it could be a symptom of cancer in the uterus. The doctor must first confirm the cause of bleeding before proceeding to Serophene treatment.

Discontinue use of Serophene if you are already pregnant or if you think you are pregnant. This may cause birth defects in the unborn child. Consult your doctor immediately if you think you might be pregnant.

Serophene may also cause dizziness and blurred vision so take care when doing everyday activities, especially those that require your full attention.

Common side effects include bloating, dizziness, blurred vision, abdominal discomfort, hot flashes, or reversible enlargement of the ovary and cyst formation. However, inform your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, nausea and vomiting. Serophene may also cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in rare cases, which may range from mild abdominal discomfort and ovarian swelling to life-threatening complications such as fluid build up in the areas near stomach and heart. In some rare cases, reversible female hair loss may be observed.

Another observed side effect of Serophene use is the increased chance of multiple live births. There is a greater chance of conceiving twins while taking this medication.

You may also experience vision changes other than blurring such as seeing spots or flashes or an increased sensitivity to light. These usually go away during the first few days of treatment but in rare cases the vision change might be permanent. Consult your doctor if you experience these symptoms or feel any eye pain.
