Generic Suprax

Suprax is a cephalosporin antibiotic which fights bacterial infections in the body. Suprax is inappropriate for infections caused by other sources such as fungus or viruses. Suprax can be prescribed generically as cefixime. Suprax is commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, ear and skin infections, gonorrhea, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and sometimes infection in the mouth. Patients should complete the entire round of antibiotics even if they start to feel better and become asymptomatic, as this is not an indication that the infection has cleared. Stopping Suprax prematurely may result in the return of the infection.

Suprax should not be prescribed without an accurate medical history. Not all patients will be able to take Suprax without aggravating existing conditions. Patients with additional medical conditions may not be able to take Suprax or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition. Patients with a history of kidney disease or a previous allergic reaction to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotic fall into this category.

Suprax is not expected to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies and has been granted a pregnancy risk rating of category B by the American Food and Drug Administration. Suprax has not been determined to pass through the mother’s breast milk, nor has it been determined safe for a breast feeding infant. Women who are pregnant should calculate the risks and the benefits of taking Suprax while women who are nursing should avoid taking this medication.

Suprax is associated with side effects. Severe side effects may occur in patients who have no previous experience with cephalosporin antibiotics. Allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, facial swelling, and hives) severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration caused by vomiting or diarrhea, red or peeling and blistering rash, unexplained bleeding, unusual bruising, and mucous or blood in the stools all require immediate emergency medical attention as these are signs of adverse health effects associated with Suprax.

Less serious and mild side effects are much more common and may include symptoms such as mild nausea or diarrhea, and a vaginal or oral yeast infection. Side effects such as these do not need to medical attention beyond treating the yeast infection and reporting the symptoms to the prescribing physician. Many physicians recommend eating a daily serving of yogurt to avoid yeast infection, especially for women.

Suprax should be taken on a regular schedule which is evenly spaced to maintain a specific level of medication in the bloodstream, although patients may forget a dose form time to time. Forgotten or missed doses can be taken when remembered unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can either be skipped, or the patient can take the dose and adjust the remaining doses to maintain an appropriate schedule. Taking double doses or taking too much medication can cause an overdose, which can lead to health complications such as abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

Patients should be warned not to mix certain medications and never to take additional medications including over the counter, prescription, or herbal medications without first consulting with the prescribing physician or pharmacist. Drug interactions can either cause serious health complications or can create ineffective medication. Medications with known interactions with Suprax include probenecid, blood thinners such as warfarin, as well as additional antibiotics. Physicians should always assess a complete medical history and current medication list prior to prescribing Suprax.
