Generic Levaquin information
Levaquin is often generically prescribed as levofloxacin and can be used to treat pneumonia, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, bronchitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and other bacterial infections. Levaquin is in a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Levaquin should be taken for the entire length of time it has been prescribed, otherwise the infection is likely to come back more aggressively than before.
Levaquin is not well tolerated by all patients and it is highly recommended the prescribing physician complete a thorough medical evaluation before prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes head injury, brain tumor, kidney disease, seizures, epilepsy, or a personal or family history of Long Q T syndrome are likely not to tolerate Levaquin well and may not be able to take it. Some patients with medical issues require careful monitoring to ensure other medical problems do not worsen, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition. Levaquin is not approved for use in patients under 18 years of age.
The American Food and Drug Administration evaluated Levaquin and rated it as a pregnancy risk category C. Levaquin has a proven history of causing birth defects or harm in unborn babies. Levaquin also passes through the mother’s breast milk and is likely to cause ill to a nursing infant. Levaquin is not appropriate for patients who are pregnant or nursing.
Side effects caused by Levaquin can be quite severe and may require immediate medical attention. Side effects that are associated with medical emergencies include allergic reactions, confusion, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, seizures, red or blistering and peeling rash, tremors, shaking, a decrease in the ability to urinate, easy bruising or bleeding, dark urine, clay colored stool, jaundice, low fever, loss of appetite, numbness, burning, pain, tingles, bloody or watery diarrhea, or sudden pain or swelling near the joints.
Other side effects which typically do not require medical attention could include insomnia or other sleep problems, feeling restless, feeling nervous, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mild itching, mild skin rash, and vaginal discharge usually accompanied by itching. These side effects should be reported to the physician as sometimes their discomfort can be alleviated via a change in the dosage.
Patients should not take too much Levaquin as it may result in an overdose which can lead to serious health effects. If a dose of Levaquin is accidentally missed, the dose should be taken as soon as possible. If the dose is more than 2 hours late, the dose should be skipped and dosing should resume at the next scheduled dose. Overdosing is dangerous and can lead to droopy eyelids, weakness, loss of balance, loss of coordination, lethargy, trouble breathing, sweating, tremors, and convulsions.
Some medications will cause health effects and serious reactions when taken with Levaquin. Patients should be advised never to take additional medication, even over the counter or herbal products, without first consulting the physician or pharmacist. Medicinal reactions can result in death. Medications with a known history of reacting with Levaquin include cisapride, depridil, droperidol, methadone, pentamidine, theophylline, blood thinners like warfarin or Coumadin, oral diabetes medication, insulin, aspirin, NSAID pain relievers, additional antibiotics especially erythromycin and clarithromycin, medications that are commonly used to treat psychiatric disorders, and heart rhythm medications.
