Generic Nexium information
Nexium, which is generically prescribed as esomeprazole, is commonly used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, as well as the prevention of stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers, or the erosion of the esophagus. Nexium has been shown to heal lesions in the esophagus caused by acid and is used in the prevention of gastric ulcers caused by the chronic use of NSAIDs or infection of helicobacter pylori.
Nexium is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes a previous sensitivity to esomeprazole or any type of liver disease may not be able to take Nexium or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration has rated Nexium as a pregnancy risk category B. Nexium is not known to pose the threat of harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. It has yet to be determined whether or not this medication passes through the mother’s breast milk and can affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to nursing women and should thoroughly discuss whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks before prescribing it to pregnant women.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Nexium, some of which are severe. A patient experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical care. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms such as facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require immediate emergency medical attention include symptoms such as uncontrollable diarrhea or constipation leading to bowel impaction.
Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, gas, headache, or dry mouth. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Nexium.
Nexium should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical treatment. An overdose will present with symptoms such as blurry vision, confusion, headache, dry mouth, fast heart rate, nausea, sweating, flushing, shortness of breath, tremors, lack of coordination, or convulsions.
There is a risk of negative drug interaction associated with Nexium. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications that have a known negative interaction with Nexium include digoxin, iron supplements, atazanavir, diazepam, ketoconazole, and blood thinners.
Nexium is recommended for short term use only, typically only about 4 to 8 weeks. Patients requiring more intensive therapies should be prescribed alternative medications. Often Nexium is prescribed together with antibiotics to treat the cause while Nexium treats the symptoms and heals the damage.
