Generic Grisactin

Grisactin is an antifungal medication which is typically used in the treatment of fungal infections involving the skin, nails, and hair. It can be prescribed and used as an antibiotic is for bacterial infections, only to treat infections brought on by a fungus. Patients who use Grisactin should not stop taking it even when their symptoms are gone, rather they are required to take it as long as the prescribing physician has recommended to ensure the fungus has been eradicated from the body. Grisactin is prescribed generically as griseofulvin.

Grisactin is not appropriate for all patients and the prescribing physician should take a thorough medical history prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes liver disease or porphyria may not able to take Grisactin or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.

The American Food and Drug Administration does not recommend prescribing this medication to women who are pregnant, nursing, or who may become pregnant, and has rated it as a category C pregnancy risk. There is a risk the Grisactin will cause harm or birth defects in an unborn baby. There is also a significant risk this medication will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. Grisactin also lowers the sperm count of a male patient and it is recommended he wait at least six months after treatment before fathering a child.

There is a risk of side effects associated with Grisactin, some of which may be severe. Side effects such as severe vomiting or diarrhea, or dehydration caused by vomiting or diarrhea, require emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction would require immediate medical care as well, presenting as facial swelling, swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, and hives.

Less serious side effects generally require no medical attention. Patients should, however, report all side effects to the prescribing physician. Side effects such as white patches in the mouth, cheeks, or throat, headaches, mild or moderate nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, numbness of the hands or feet or a sensation of tingles, menstrual irregularities, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, or insomnia can often be associated with Grisactin and may be relieved by lowering the dosage of the medication.

Grisactin should be taken as it has been prescribed by the physician and should not be increased or decreased without first consulting with the prescribing physician. If a dose is missed then it should be taken as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose in which case it should be skipped altogether. Taking a double dose of this medication or taking two doses too close together may result in an accidental overdose. If an overdose sis suspected then immediate emergency medical care is required. An overdose may present with symptoms which include confusion, numbness, tingling sensations, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or other previously unknown symptoms.

There is a risk of drug interactions associated with Grisactin, and the prescribing physician should urge patients to inquire within before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. A thorough medical history should be readily understood before taking prescribing this medication, including a current medication list. Medications with known interactions associated with Grisactin include cyclosporine, salicylates, salsalates, magnesium salicylates, choline salicylates, blood thinners and anticoagulants, and birth control pills.

Patients should be advised that Grisactin may make their skin more sensitive to sun exposure and precautions should be taken to avoid serious sunburns. Using alcohol may create other health effects. Barbiturates are likely to make Grisactin less effective.
