Naprosyn, which is generically prescribed as naproxin, is commonly used to treat joint inflammation caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, injury, surgery, or other causes. Naprosyn is part of the family of medications known as NSAIDs, also known as Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This means that Naprosyn is a pain reliever without steroids.
Naprosyn is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes heavy drinking, heart attack, stroke, blood clot, heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, nasal polyps, bleeding disorder, blood clot disorder, or a heavy smoker may not be able to take Naprosyn or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Naprosyn as a pregnancy risk category C. Naprosyn has been proven to cause harm or birth defects in an unborn baby. Naprosyn has also been proven to pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to women who are nursing, pregnant, or have a high likelihood of becoming pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Naprosyn, some of which are severe. Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as bloating, gas, upset stomach, mild nausea, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, dizziness, nervousness, blurry vision, or ringing in the ears.
