Generic Rhinocort information
Rhinocort is an anti-inflammatory steroidal nasal spray manufactured by AstraZeneca. It is used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and reduce nasal polyps. Its active ingredient budesonide is a glucocorticoid steroid that has been associated with less bone loss and other side effects associated with similar medication. Rhinocort is available in concentrations of 32mcg and 64mcg per spray dose containing 120 doses.
Recommended dosage of Rhinocort for patients 6 years old and above is 64mcg every day, administered as one spray in each nostril. It is not recommended however to exceed 256mcg in a day, or 4 sprays each nostril. Improvement should be noticed immediately or within 10 hours from taking the dose.
Before using a new bottle of Rhinocort, the medicine first has to be primed by shaking it very well and giving it 8 test sprays until a fine mist is produced. If used daily it does not need to be reprimed before every use. If not used for 2 consecutive days, reprime with one spray before using. If not used for more than 2 weeks straight, reprime with two sprays or until a fine mist is produced. Discard the bottle after 120 sprays as the concentration of the drug would have significantly reduced by then.
It may take two weeks before maximum results may be experienced.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of thyroid or liver condition and if you experience any nasal trauma or surgery or if you are prone to nasal bleeding. Rhinocort may rarely be absorbed directly to the bloodstream through the nose and excess amounts may cause complications that will require further treatment. Certain factors may then raise the risk of absorption. Rhinocort may also slow down the healing of nasal surgery or trauma, as with corticoid drugs.
Taking steroidal drugs such a Rhinocort may suppress the immune system slightly and may put you under risk for certain infections. Inform your doctor if you think you may have been exposed to chickenpox or measles while on Rhinocort. Also, steroidal drugs may slow down the growth of children when administered to them. The effects may reach up to one centimeter less growth every year. If this is a concern, consult your doctor to know how best to manage this issue.
Rhinocort may also immediately aggravate asthma and can cause an attack. Always keep asthma medication at hand to handle such situations.
Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medication, particularly liver medication or azole antifungal drugs as these are known to increase the concentration of budesonide in the bloodstream. Consult with your doctor to find an alternative solution.
If you experience dry throat or nose or sneezing, it should not be a cause for alarm. However, if these symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
Immediately seek medical attention if you develop swelling, yellow or green-colored nasal discharge, breathing difficulty, repeated nose bleeding or behavioral changes especially in children.
Do not go beyond the recommended dosage by your doctor as you may experience effects of hypercorticism.
