Generic Zestril

Zestril is a member of the family of medicines known as ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. It can be prescribed generically as lisinopril or it can be prescribed as Prinivil. It is most commonly prescribed to aid in the treatment of congestive heart failure or hypertension. It is sometimes prescribed after a heart attack to minimize the chances of a second heart attack and to help limit the chance of death after the experience of a heart attack.

Many patients find that the excessive sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea often caused by Zestril contribute to rapid dehydration. Patients should be urged to drink plenty of fluids when starting this medication.

Zestril is not appropriate for all patients and some patients may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication. A medical history which includes liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, or a connective tissue disease (lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis) may indicate potential difficulties handling this medication. Proceeding should only be done with caution.

The American Food and Drug Administration rated Zestril as a pregnancy risk category D, which means that it is likely to cause birth defects to an unborn fetus. Zestril is not appropriate for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Pregnancy tests are recommended for those who are unsure about their status. Women who are nursing are urged to avoid this medication. It has not yet been determined whether or not Zestril will cause harm to a nursing baby.

If the patients accidentally misses a dose, he or she should be instructed to take the dose as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, the missed dose can be skipped to avoid an overdose, and regular dosing should continue at the next dose.

An overdose can occur from taking too many doses at once or from taking doses too close together. In the event of a suspected overdose, the patient should seek urgent medical care without delay. An overdose may cause symptoms such as light headedness, dizziness, fatigue, or fainting and in extreme cases coma or death.

Side effects are common when taking any medication, and Zestril is no different. Mild side effects often require no medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Symptoms such as headaches, cough, drowsiness, dizziness, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mild itching, or a faint skin rash are common.

Sometimes, patients may experience much more severe side effects including but not limited to allergic reactions, which present with respiratory distress, hives, and swelling of the lips, mouth, face, tongue, or throat. Other serious side effects may include light headedness and fainting, chest pain, edema, rapid weight gain, pounding or uneven heart rhythm, fatigue with muscle weakness, flu symptoms like fever, chills, and body aches, excessive urination or lack of urination, or generally feeling severely ill and need immediate medical assistance.

Patients should be advised to avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Zestril, as it can enhance the negative side effects. Patients should also avoid mixing medications such as aspirin or NSAID pain relievers, lithium, potassium supplements, diuretics, oral diabetes medications, and injected insulin. Patients should also avoid salt substitutes that contain potassium. The prescribing physician should urge the patient to call and inquire before taking any type of new medication, vitamin or herbal supplement. This includes over the counter medications and prescription medicine.
