Generic Aygestin information
Aygestin is a brand name for the generic drug norethindrone acetate. It is a combination of estrogen and progestin which is prescribed for the treatment of the absence of menstrual periods, irregular periods due to a hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, and abnormal bleeding of the uterus. It is prescribed in pill form, and is often given to patients who cannot take oral contraceptives.
Although Aygestin is generally well tolerated, some side effects have been reported in those using it. These include spotting or breakthrough bleeding, changes in menstrual flow, swelling, gaining or losing weight, acne, jaundice, depression, headache or migraine, breast tenderness, hair loss, high blood sugar, easy bruising, yeast infections, lowering of HDL cholesterol, rash, nausea, mood swings, insomnia, or partial loss of vision. Other rare but serious side effects can include lumps in your breasts, dizziness or fainting, changed in speech, chest pains, difficulty breathing, blood clots in the arteries, pains in your legs, or changes in your vision. If you have an allergic reaction to Aygestin, you may experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Some people should be very cautious in taking Aygestin. Aygestin may cause you to retain fluids, so if you have a condition that is affected by water retention, you should use caution in taking Aygestin. Some of these conditions include epilepsy, migraines, heart problems or kidney problems. If you have breakthrough bleeding, you should be evaluated to make sure that it is because of the medication and not because of some other medical problem. If you have a history of depression, your doctor may want to monitor you to make sure your depression symptoms don’t get worse. Aygestin can also make diabetes worse because it destabilizes carbohydrate digestion. Your doctor may want to monitor your blood sugar levels while you are taking Aygestin. If you have any recent conditions caused by blood clots, such as stroke, pulmonary embolism, or heart attacks, or impaired liver or kidney function, you should not take Aygestin. If you have ever had breast cancer, you should discuss with your doctor whether Aygestin is right for you. There are some medications your doctor will need to know about if you are taking Aygestin. Tell your doctor if you take Cytadren, Tegretol, phenobarbitol, Dilantin, Mycobutin, Rifadin, or Rimactane.
Aygestin is in Pregnancy Category X, which means that it is likely to cause harm to developing fetuses and should not be taken during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Aygestin also passes into breast milk, so you should be extremely careful if you are nursing or planning to nurse a baby. It is not known whether the amounts in breast milk are sufficient to harm a nursing child, so you should discuss with your doctor whether to continue treatment with Aygestin while you are nursing. Aygestin is not recommended for use in children, and it is not for use by men or by post-menopausal women.
