Generic Ditropan information
Ditropan, which is generically prescribed as oxybutynin, is commonly used in the treatment of overactive bladder, frequent urination, mild incontinence, urgent urination, and increased nighttime urination. Ditropan relaxes the muscle spasms associated with the urinary tract and bladder which cause these symptoms.
Ditropan is not appropriate for everyone and a thorough patient medical history should be adequately evaluated before prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes untreated glaucoma, uncontrolled glaucoma, decreased urination, an inability to urinate, or a blockage of the digestive tract can not take Ditropan. Patients with a medical history which includes liver disease, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, intestinal disorders, ulcerative colitis, or a stomach disorder may not be able to take Ditropan or may require special monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with Ditropan, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Ditropan as a category B pregnancy risk which means that it is not expected to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies. It has yet to be determined whether or not Ditropan passes into the mother’s breast milk and causes harm to a nursing baby. Ditropan should be used with caution in women who are pregnant or nursing.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Ditropan, and some of them may present serious health effects. An allergic reaction will require immediate emergency medical intervention and will most likely present with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, hives, and facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. Other serious side effects may include pain or burning or other complications while urinating, uneven heart rate, or a fever with accompanying hot and dry skin.
Less serious side effects are more likely to occur, and while side effects can not be predicted, common side effects include stuffy nose, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, dry mouth, blurry vision, dry eyes, back pain, insomnia, sleep problems, feeling restless, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or warmth or tingling or redness under the skin. Less serious side effects should be reported to the prescribing physician to help determine the appropriate dosage requirements for each individual patient.
Ditropan should be taken as it has been prescribed by the physician. Patients who miss a dose should be instructed to take the dose when they remember unless it is close to the next dose in which case the missed dose should be skipped. An overdose of Ditropan is going to require emergency medical care and may present with symptoms such as tingly sensation, fever, restlessness, uneven heart rate, vomiting, and a decrease in urination or a complete lack of urine output.
There are drugs that are likely to interact with Ditropan. A complete medical history should be thoroughly assessed prior to prescribing this medication, including a complete list of current medications. Patients should be instructed to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any type of new medication which includes over the counter medication and herbal remedies. Medication with known interactions with Ditropan includes scopolamine, antibiotics, atropine, belladonna, dicyclomine, clidinium, glycopyrrolate, hyoscyamine, mepenzolate, and propantheline.
Patients should be cautioned to avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated in hot weather and instructed to avoid the use of alcohol while taking Ditropan. Medications that cause drowsiness are likely to add to the drowsiness that is associated with Ditropan, and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
