Generic Geodon information
Geodon is generically prescribed as ziprasidone and is commonly used in the treatment of psychotic disorders. It is used to treat symptoms such as hallucinations, hearing voices, unusual suspiciousness, withdrawal from family and friends, and sensing things that are not there. It is not uncommon for Geodon to be used to treat mania cycles of bipolar disorder. Geodon is an antipsychotic medication.
There is a potentially deadly side effect known as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome that requires immediate medical assistance. If the patient experiences symptoms such as severe muscle rigidity of the cheeks, jaw, arms, or legs, fast and irregular heart rate, fever, sweating, confusion, and uncontrollable muscle movements of mouth, tongue, cheeks, arms, or legs the only life saving option is an emergency room.
Geodon is not appropriate for every patient. Thorough medical history should be examined prior to the prescription of this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes an irregular heart rte, Long QT syndrome, heart attacks, heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, liver disease, diabetes, hypoglycemia, dizziness, fainting, epilepsy, seizures, or Alzheimer’s disease may not be able to take Geodon or may be in need of special monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the severity of the condition.
It has yet to be determined whether or not this medication will affect an unborn baby by causing harm or birth defects. It has yet to be determined whether or not this medication will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication as a pregnancy risk category C and physicians should not prescribe Geodon to women who are pregnant, nursing, or who may become pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Geodon, some of which could be severe. If a patient experiences a serious side effect, an allergic reaction, or Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical intervention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects may include muscle spasms of the face or neck, uncontrollable movements of the tongue, face, lips, or extremities, severe restlessness, tremors, rash, severe dizziness, fainting, irregular heart rate, or fast or pounding heartbeat.
Less serious side effects are not likely to require immediate medical care but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Less serious side effects can often be lessened to a more tolerable degree but lowering the dosage of Geodon. Less serious side effects include mild restlessness, mild tremors, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, mild dizziness, a cough, or a runny nose.
Medication dosages should be monitored for those who are unable to do so themselves, and Geodon should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be skipped if it is almost time for the next regular dose. Otherwise the dose should be taken as soon as it is possible. A double dose of this medication should never be taken as it could lead to an overdose. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should be taken to an emergency medical facility immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include slurred speech, dizziness, drowsiness, increased heart rate, fever, fainting, muscle spasms, sweating, and uncontrollable movements of the tongue, face, or extremities.
Medications such as mesoridazine, chlorpromazine, pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, sotalol, moxifloxacin, mefloquine, pentidine, droperidol, arsenic trioxide, dolasetron, levomethadyl, tacrolimus, ketoconazole, erythromycin, carbamazepine, medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease, and medications used to lower blood pressure can all have a negative interaction with Geodon. Thorough evaluations of the patient’s current medications and firm instructions to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medicines and herbal remedies, can help prevent serious and life threatening drug interactions.
