Generic Hytrin information
Hytrin is generically prescribed as terazosin and is commonly used to treat hypertension. Hytrin has also been successfully used in the treatment of enlarged prostate. Hytrin is part of the family of medications known as alpha adrenergic blockers which successfully widen and relax blood vessels in the body allowing for better blood flow with less resistance. This helps the heart pump an appropriate amount of blood throughout the body with less effort.
Hytrin may not be well tolerated by patients during cataract surgery, although not all patients should stop taking Hytrin prior to having cataract surgery. Whether or not a patient should stop taking the medication prior to surgery is at the discretion of the surgeon.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication after evaluating it for potential harm during pregnancy and breast feeding. Hytrin was rated a category C pregnancy risk. This means that Hytrin is likely to cause harm or birth defects in an unborn child. While it has yet to be determined whether or not this medication passes through the mother’s breast milk and affects a breast feeding baby, it is recommended that women who are nursing avoid potential issues and should not take Hytrin. Women who are pregnant are advised to avoid taking Hytrin.
Patients should always follow physician instructions when taking Hytrin and should never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose or for any other reason. A missed dose can be taken when remembered or skipped if it is nearing time for the next dose. Patients should be advised that taking too much Hytrin may result in an overdose. Overdosing on Hytrin can lead to serious health complications and requires immediate medical intervention. Patients who overdose on Hytrin may experience cold and clammy skin, weak but accelerated heart rate, shallow breathing, fainting, lightheadedness, and dizziness.
The side effects associated with Hytrin may be severe or mild. If a patient experiences a severe side effect or an allergic reaction, he or she should receive prompt medical attention. Allergic reactions often present with symptoms like facial swelling, gasping and difficulty breathing, and hives. Additional severe side effects can include symptoms like lightheadedness, swelling in the ankles, hands, or feet, fainting, accelerated heart rate, pounding heart, or a painful erection of the penis that remains for a period of four hours or more.
Mild side effects do not require medical attention although patients should be advised that reporting them to the prescribing physician may allow for a dosage adjustment. Mild side effects are likely to include symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, headaches, stuffy nose, numbness, the sensation of tingles, or blurry vision.
Patients should be advised to never take a new medication, over the counter medication, herbal remedy, or vitamin supplement without first checking with the prescribing physician. Some medication may cause negative interactions if taken with Hytrin, and some medications may make Hytrin less effective or ineffective. Medications known to negatively interact with Hytrin include additional blood pressure medications, specifically those which are the equivalent to the generic medication verapamil. This includes but is not limited to Calan, Covera, Verelan, and Isoptin.
Patients should avoid taking any medication which is known to invoke sleepiness such as cold medication, antihistamines, analgesics, muscle relaxants, sedatives, and sleep aids, as these types of medications can create severe drowsiness when taken with Hytrin. Patients should use caution when driving a car and operating machinery as Hytrin may impair reaction time as well as the patient’s ability to think clearly.
