Generic Frumil

Frumil is generically prescribed as amiloride and known as a potassium sparing diuretic. Potassium sparing diuretics such as Frumil are prescribed to prevent the body from retaining fluid and salts which can impact on other medical conditions. Frumil may also be used in the treatment of hypokalemia, or low levels of potassium in the body.

Some patients will not be able to take Frumil, including patients with high potassium levels in the blood, kidney disease and the inability to urinate, and patients who are taking other diuretics, potassium sparing diuretics, or potassium supplements. Patients with diabetes, liver disease, heart disease, cirrhosis of the liver, or a breathing disorder may require careful monitoring or may not be able to take Frumil, depending on the condition and its severity as well as the overall health condition of the patient.

Frumil has undergone evaluation by the American Food and Drug Administration and was granted a pregnancy risk rating category B which means that Frumil is not expected to cause harm or birth defects in developing fetuses. It has not been determined whether or not Frumil passes through the mother’s breast milk and affects a nursing baby, thus women who are nursing should avoid taking Frumil. Women who are pregnant should determine whether or not the risks outweigh the benefits before taking Frumil.

It is vital that patients take their regular dosage of Frumil as it has been prescribed and should avoid altering the medication without express permission from the physician. Patients who accidentally miss a regular dose should take the dose when it is possible and should not take a double dose to make up for the missed medication. However, Frumil should not be taken in large doses nor should doses be taken too closely together and thus if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped. An overdose of Frumil may present with symptoms which include excessive thirst, lightheadedness, dizziness, a slow heart rate, and fainting, and in extreme cases, a coma or death. Patients who may have taken an overdose of Frumil should seek immediate emergency medical care. Frumil presents a risk of side effects. Some side effects associated with Frumil may be serious and require urgent medical intervention. Symptoms including severe itching, hives, swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, face, or throat, and difficulty breathing are typical symptoms of an allergic reaction, which requires immediate and urgent medical care. Symptoms such as tremors, confusion, shallow breathing, dry mouth, excessive thirst, nausea and vomiting with fatigue, drowsiness, restlessness, lightheadedness, a decrease or absence in urine, muscle pain, weakness, numbness, tingles, uneven heart rate, accelerated or slow heart rate, and nausea with vomiting, low grade fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools, fatigue, stomach pain, and jaundice require urgent medical care as well and are considered the primary serious side effects.

Frumil generally presents a risk of less serious side effects and most patients report symptoms such as gas, stomach pain, skin rash, mild nausea, headaches, and loss of appetite. These symptoms are common when taking Frumil and do not require prompt medical attention, although patients may wish to report these side effects when discussing patient progress.

Patients should always provide an accurate list of all current medications when discussing treatment options with their physician. Some medications can not be taken with Frumil while others may require special dosing or monitoring. Patients should always request express consent from the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications, herbal remedies, and vitamin or energy supplements. Medications with known interactions with Frumil include lithium, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, ACE inhibitors, or NSAID pain relievers including but not limited to indomethacin.
