Generic Fulvicin information
Fulvicin is generically known as griseofulvin and is commonly prescribed to treat fungal infections, typically of the skin, nails, or hair. This antifungal can be used to treat jock itch, athlete’s foot, barber’s itch, as well as other external fungal infections. Fulvicin is used like an antibiotic but is used for fungus related infections rather than bacterial infections.
Fulvicin should not be indiscriminately prescribed and a full medical history should be assessed prior to using this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes liver disease or porphyria may not be able to take Fulvicin, or may require careful monitoring while undergoing treatment with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
Fulvicin has been rated by the American Food and Drug Administration as a category C pregnancy risk, which means that there is a likelihood that this medication will cause harm or birth defects, including conjoined twins, if taken while pregnant. Fulvicin is likely to cause harm if used by a breast feeding mother, as it does pass through the mother’s breast milk. Fulvicin has also been associated with a temporary low sperm count and it is recommended that men wait six months after treatment before attempting to father a child.
There are side effects associated with Fulvicin, some of which can be quite severe. Allergic reactions and serious side effects require immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms which include difficulty breathing, hives, and facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical attention include symptoms such as severe vomiting or diarrhea and dehydration caused by severe vomiting or diarrhea.
Less serious side effects are much more common and while they do not require emergency medical attention, they should be reported to the prescribing physician to help ensure the correct dosage. Less serious side effects can often be alleviated to a more comfortable level by reducing the dosage of Fulvicin. Side effects such as mild vomiting and diarrhea, nausea, white patches in the mouth, the cheeks, or the throat, irregularities in the menstrual cycle, insomnia, confusion, or numbness and tingling of the hands and feet should be reported to the prescribing physician.
Fulvicin should be taken as it has been prescribed. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is nearing time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to prevent a potential overdose. Accidental or intentional overdosing of Fulvicin requires emergency medical intervention. Symptoms of an overdose may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and the sensation of tingles or numbness.
There is a risk of drug interactions associated with Fulvicin. Patients should not take any additional prescription medications, over the counter medications, vitamin supplements, or herbal remedies without consulting the prescribing physician first. Medications with known interactions with Fulvicin include anticoagulants and blood thinners, oral contraceptives, salicylates such as aspirin, salsalates, choline salicylate, magnesium salicylates, and cyclosporine.
Some medications may make Fulvicin less effective when taken with Fulvicin including birth control pills and barbiturates. Patients should also be advised that Fulvicin increases the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and prolonged exposure may result in severe sun burn. Alcohol should be used only with extreme care when undergoing treatment with Fulvicin.
