Generic Loxitane information
Loxitane is a brand name for the generic drug loxapine. It is used to treat certain mental or mood disorders, such as schizophrenia. It is prescribed to help people think more clearly, to feel less nervous, and to participate more fully in daily activities. It helps to reduce aggression and helps relieve the desire that often comes with schizophrenia to hurt yourself or others. Loxitane can also help reduce hallucinations.
Loxitane can have side effects, but do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. Suddenly stopping your medication can make your symptoms worse than they were before you started medication. Some of the common side effects you might experience include an elevated heart rate, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or constipation. Other side effects are serious enough that your doctor might prescribe another medication just to manage the side effects of Loxitane. Those side effects are known as EPS, or extrapyramidal symptoms, which are problems of the muscle and nervous systems. They can include increased anxiety, trouble swallowing, which can lead to drooling, restlessness or a need to be constantly moving, shaking, a shuffling walk, or stiffness in the muscles. Call your doctor if you experience any of these effects.
Another set of effects is rare but serious, and you should also tell your doctor immediately if you experience them. This set includes fainting, problems urinating, chest pain, chronic nausea, signs of infection such as sore throat or fever, stomach pain, dark urine or a change in the amount of urine, sweating more than usual, irregular heart beat, yellowing of the eyes or skin, muscle spasms or cramps or rigid muscles, seizures, or bleeding or bruising easily. You should also tell your doctor if you develop symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, a condition that includes repetitive muscles movements such as lip smacking or puckering, tongue thrusting, chewing, or finger or toe movements. If you have an allergic reaction to Loxitane, you may experience a rash or hives, itching, swelling, dizziness or difficulty breathing. It can also make you more sensitive to the sun, so you should avoid spending much time outdoors unless you protect your skin.
In rare cases, Loxitane may cause your body to increase its production of prolactin, which can result in the production of breast milk, even when you are not pregnant or nursing. It can also cause your periods to become irregular or to stop altogether, and make it difficult for you to become pregnant. If you are already pregnant, you should not take Loxapine, because there have been no studies to determine its safety for a pregnant woman or her fetus. It is also not recommended that you breast feed while taking Loxapine, as it may pass into breast milk. If you are a man, you might notice a decrease in sexual ability, an inability to produce sperm, or enlarged breasts.
Loxapine is not recommended for use by the elderly, since side effects can be more pronounced for this age group. It has also not been tested for children, and is generally not prescribed for them.
