Meclizine is a drug that inhibits the function of an enzyme called histamine. As such, Meclizine falls under the category of drugs called antihistamine.

Meclizine is typically prescribed for conditions symptomatic of motion sickness. This includes nausea, dizziness and vomiting. It is also possible for Meclizine to address vertigo. Vertigo is a condition in which the person feels as if he is spinning or swaying even though he is not moving and is standing on solid ground. Vertigo is commonly linked to the balance mechanisms inside the inner ear. In order to prevent symptoms of motion sickness, Meclizine should be taken one hour before traveling.
