Generic Phenergan

Phenergan, generically known as promethazine tablets, is a phenothiazine antihistamine that is utilized for many medical conditions. It is commonly used to temporarily relieve allergy symptoms both perennial and seasonal. Phenergan is also used to control nausea and vomiting from anesthesia and surgery, to control prevent motion sickness, to include light sedation and used as adjunctive therapy to anaphylactic reactions. This medication is not be used to treat lower respiratory illnesses, including asthma.

Phenergan is to be taken exactly as direct and lab tests and follow-up visits are necessary to monitor the drug’s effectiveness. It is common that dose adjustments are made in the beginning of therapy. The patient should never adjust dose or stop treatment without the prescribing physician’s knowledge. Taking more medication than prescribed can result in excessive drowsiness or other side effects can occur. If a dose is missed or forgotten, take a dose as soon as possible. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, then the patient should skip the dose and take the next schedule dose. They should never take more than 1 dose at time.

It is not advisable to take additional over-the-counter antihistamines, medications, herbal medicines or dietary supplements unless directed by the health care provider. Anyone taking astemizole, cisapride, tramadol or terfenadine cannot take this medication. The consumption of alcohol and other depressants should be avoided. The patient should avoid strenuous activities in high temperatures or humidity, consuming alcohol or stay out unnecessary sunlight while taking this medication. CNS depression (sedation to coma), apnea, diminished mental alertness, tremors, convulsions, muscle rigidity, profound hypotension, dizziness, flushing, dry mouth and fever are all symptoms of overdose and if an overdose is suspected; immediately contact the emergency room or urgent care center.

This medication has been given a pregnancy rating of C, by the American Food and Drug Administration. Women should avoid taking Phenergan while in their third trimester and nursing mother should not take this medication or should discontinue breast feeding. Notify the health care provider if pregnancy occurs while taking this drug. Children under 2 or any child with a history of sleep apnea, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or hepatic diseases should not be prescribed this medication. Use caution when dispensing Phenergan to elderly patients, the drug can increase the frequency of decreased hepatic, renal or cardiac functions.

Phenergan can interact with the following drugs: anticholinergics, barbiturates, CNS depressants, epinephrine, MAO inhibitors and metrizamide. This medication has been known to interfere with pregnancy and glucose tolerance tests. Phenergan can interact with medical conditions including but not limited to bone marrow depression, blood or heart disease, low blood pressure, liver problems, prostate problems, Parkinson’s disease, seizures or Reyes Syndrome. A full medical history should be evaluated before prescribing this medication.

Side effects are common and generally do not require medical assistance. Dizziness, dry mouth, occasional blurred vision, high or low blood pressure, nausea, rash or vomiting are common side effects and should be reported to the health care provider, especially if the become bothersome.

Some patients may develop life threatening side effects, which require urgent medical attention. Severe allergic reactions (hives, swelling of mouth, throat, face, lips or tongue), sensitivity to light, uncontrolled muscle movements and yellowing of the skin or eyes are severe side effects and the patients should seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
