Zocor is not recommended for all patients. Patients need to inform their physician is they have any of the following conditions or symptoms: diabetes, underactive thyroid, muscle spasms or kidney disease. In any of these cases, the medication may still be prescribed, although the dosage may be adjusted to accommodate the conflicting condition. It is advisable that anyone with liver disease or anyone that consumes large quantities of alcohol not take this medication; the alcohol will raise the level of triglyceride levels and liver damage can occur.
This medication does cause birth defects and the prescribing physician should be notified immediately if pregnancy occurs. The FDA has rated this medication with an X pregnancy category. The use of a reliable form of birth control is recommended when taking Zocor. It is unknown whether the medication can be passed through breast feeding. There are several drug and dietary interaction that can occur. Zocor has been known to have an interaction with antifungal agents, grapefruit and grapefruit products, niacin, cyclosporine, macrolide antibiotics, protease inhibitors, verapamil, Coumadin and HIV and AIDS medications. This medication is not known to interfere with any type of lab testing.
Patients may experience side effects when taking Zocor; these side effects may include: mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, heartburn, upper respiratory infection, fatty change in liver, progression of cataracts, myopathy and fatigue. Serious side effects are muscle pain, dark colored urine, coloring or yellowing of the skin or eyes or weakness with flu-like symptoms. If the patient should experience any of these side effects or any other side effect not listed here; they should contact their physician immediately. There is a hypersensitivity syndrome that has been reported one or more of the following features: anaphylaxis, angioedema, lupus erythematous syndrome, polymyagia rheumatica, vasculitis, purpura, leucopenia, photosensitivity, fever, chills, flushing, malais, anemia and arthritis. Get emergency help if any of the following allergic reactions occur: hives, difficulty breathing and/or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
The patient does have the responsibility of maintaining a balanced diet and a regulated exercise routine to help reduce cholesterol and saturated fats to a minimum.
The patient should also notify the prescribing physician if there is an addition to any prescribed or over the counter medications. If a dose is missed then the patient should take a dose as soon as remembered; however, the patient should not take extra medication to compensate for the missed dose. Medical attention should be sought if there is the possibility that too much medication has been taken; however it is not life-threatening if an overdose should occur.
