Generic Mobic

Mobic is a brand name for the generic drug meloxicam, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to reduce pain and swelling or other inflammation. It is available by prescription only and comes in tablets or in an oral suspension liquid. Mobic is prescribed for the relief of the pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is prescribed in tablets to be taken once a day.

Some people should not take Mobic, including anyone who has asthma, hives, or any allergies to aspirin or other NSAIDs, including common ones such as ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, nabumetone, and ketoprofen. NSAIDs such as Mobic can cause bleeding in the stomach and other gastrointestinal problems, especially if you already have a stomach ulcer or peptic ulcer. That likelihood increases the longer you take Mobic. You should discuss any medical conditions with your doctor, because Mobic may not be right for you if you have had ulcers or stomach bleeding, if you are taking other NSAIDs, or if you are pregnant. If you have severe liver or kidney problems, you should be aware of the possibility of liver or kidney damage, which can appear as yellowing of the skin or eyes, flu-like symptoms such as achiness and fatigue, and dark urine. Other rare but serious side effects can include black stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, pain in your chest, jaw or left arm, sudden vision changes, and slurred speech. Stop taking Mobic and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical help if you experience these.

Other conditions that can keep you from benefiting from Mobic are if you retain fluids, if you have high blood pressure or if you have heart failure. Certain medications react badly with Mobic. You should let your doctor know if you are taking ACE-inhibitors, which are blood pressure medications, furosemide, lithium, warfarin, which is a blood thinner, or aspirin.

Mobic can cause side effects in some people, though some people experience no side effects at all. You may experience nausea, indigestion, upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, stomach pain, or joint pain. Mobic can also cause serious skin reactions, so if you develop a rash you should discontinue use and call your doctor immediately. This is also true if you lose or gain weight suddenly. Other side effects can include easy bruising or bleeding, fainting, increased heart rate, severe headache, mental or mood changes, or swelling of the hands or feet. These are considered severe and should be brought to your doctor’s attention.

Mobic should not be taken by women in the third trimester of pregnancy; if you are pregnant and have arthritis, discuss your treatment options with your doctor. It should not be taken while you are nursing a baby, because of possible harm that could come to the baby from the Mobic that passes into the breast milk. Mobic has not been evaluated for children under age eighteen, and those over age sixty-five should be especially careful because side effects can be magnified in this group.
