Generic Premarin

Premarin is a brand name for conjugated estrogen tablets, which are prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis. It is also used to treat symptoms of menopause, including vasomotor symptoms, vulvar and vaginal atrophy, pain relief for those suffering from breast cancer, and treatment of androgen-dependent prostate cancer. For post-menopausal osteoporosis, Premarin should be used in conjunction with weight bearing exercise and calcium and Vitamin-D supplements. If Premarin is being given to a post-menopausal woman, it should be taken concurrently with progestin to help reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

There are significant warnings associated with using Premarin that you should be aware of. Most significantly, Premarin can greatly increase the risk of developing endometrial cancer. If you are taking Premarin, any abnormal vaginal bleeding should be diagnosed right away to make sure endometrial cancer has not developed. In addition to the risk of endometrial cancer, Premarin also leads to increased risks of heart attack, stroke, invasive breast cancer, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis. Other side effects can include endometrial hyperplasia, ovarian cancer, a change in the amount of your cervical secretion, vaginitis or yeast infections, changes in vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, breast enlargement, breast pain, discharge from the nipples, fibrocystic breast disease, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, cramps, bloating, jaundice, increased risk of gallbladder disease, or pancreatitis. You may also experience melasma, a darkening of the skin around the eyes and nose, tender red nodules under the skin, hair loss or excessive hair growth, itchy skin, or rash. As with many hormonal treatments or conditions, you may find that you cannot wear your contact lenses. You could develop headache, migraine, dizziness, depression, mood swings, nervousness, involuntary movements, irritability, or dementia. If you have epilepsy or asthma, these could become worse when taking Premarin. Some people also experience low calcium levels, higher levels of triglycerides, changes in libido, swelling, and leg cramps.

There are some people who should not take Premarin. If you have abnormal genital bleeding, you should not take it, especially if the cause of the bleeding is undetermined. If you have breast cancer, or suspect that you might, or if you have a history of breast cancer, you should not take Premarin unless your doctor prescribes it for metastatic disease. If you suffer from estrogen-dependent neoplasia, the uncontrolled reproduction of cells, as well as active deep vein thrombosis or conditions that can develop from it, such as stroke, heart attack or pulmonary embolism, you should not take Premarin. This is also true of those who have any liver dysfunction or disease.

You should not take Premarin if you are pregnant. It is not intended for use by women during pregnancy, although there seems to be no evidence that it will harm a fetus if it is accidentally ingested before you discover you are pregnant. It has been shown, however, that the use of Premarin can decrease the quantity of milk that you produce if you hope to nurse a child.
