Generic Revia

Revia, with generic name naltrexone, is an opioid antagonist drug used to treat alcohol dependency and heroin or cocaine addiction. The drug acts by block signal receptors in the brain that trigger alcohol cravings. Revia not only reduces alcohol craving but also reduces the pleasure the body feels from consumption of alcohol. Unlike some drugs used to treat alcohol dependency, Revia will not make you feel sick in the even one does consume alcohol while under medication. As treatment for heroin, cocaine or other opioid addiction, Revia works similarly by blocking opioid receptors in the brain. For those suffering from alcohol dependency, a single dose of 50mg everyday is commonly prescribed. While nontoxic in the treatment of alcohol dependence, administration of Revia must be closely supervised nonetheless, and should be a supplement to therapy, counseling and other treatments for alcohol dependency.

If used for treatment of opioid addiction, an initial dose of 25mg may be given, and if withdrawal symptoms do not occur, then it may be safe to raise the dosage to 50mg each day.

In both cases, dosage and administration of Revia is subject to the doctor’s assessment of your particular case, and thus dosage will vary from person to person.

When taking Revia to treat opioid addiction, it is absolutely important that you have not taken any narcotics or opiates with in the past 7-10 days. This not only includes heroin and cocaine but also drugs such as morphine and codeine found in cough medications. A large presence of narcotics while taking Revia can trigger withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, confusion and hallucinations and may result to coma or even death. It is important to take a naloxone challenge test to determine presence of these harmful substances in the bloodstream. If the test is positive and withdrawal symptoms appear immediately occur after administering the test then Revia should not be given.

Also inform your doctor of any existent liver condition you have to determine if it is safe for you to take Revia as it may cause liver damage. You may suffer from abdominal pain lasting days, dark-colored urine, white stools and yellowing of the eye as a result.

Side effects of Revia vary between application and case. During treatment for alcohol dependency may experience nausea or vomiting, fatigue, nervousness and insomnia. Opioid dependents on the other hand may experience similar effects with the addition of abdominal or joint pain, anxiety and low energy. Consult your doctor if any of these effects appear and if they intensify.

Revia may also increase sensitivity of opioid sensors in the brain, making it necessary to take the drug daily to avoid the increased risk of severe withdrawal symptoms and opioid overdose.
