Generic Altace information
Altace is generically prescribed as ramipril and is most often used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Altace is known as an ACE inhibitor which means angiotensin converting enzyme. Altace is sometimes given to patients after a heart attack to improve their chances of survival and can also be used in the treatment of heart failure.
The American Food and Drug Administration has been give a pregnancy risk rating of category D which means that Altace has been proven to cause birth defects or harm to a developing fetus. Women who are pregnant should not take Altace. Altace has also been proven to pass through the mother’s breast milk and can cause harm to a nursing baby. Women who are nursing should not take this medication.
Patients with additional health conditions may also not be able to take Altace, or may require special monitoring or dosing while taking this medication. The prescribing physician should take a thorough medical history prior to prescribing Altace and should ask explicitly about medical histories which include congestive heart failure or other heart disease, connective tissue disorders such as lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune and connective tissue disorders, liver disease, kidney disease, dialysis, or diabetes. These conditions may worsen or the medications that are used to treat these conditions may interact with Altace.
A small percentage of patients may experience significant side effects which require medical attention. Patients who experience allergic reactions, or facial swelling, swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, should seek immediate medical attention. Patients who experience chest pain, rapid weight gain or fluid retention and swelling, increased urination, decreased urination, no urine output, lightheadedness, fainting, fever, chills body aches, flu symptoms, pale skin, easy bruising, excessive bleeding, pounding heart, uneven heart rate, severe fatigue, noticeable muscle weakness, or any side effect which makes the patient feel seriously ill should seek immediate emergency medical attention.
More commonly, patients experience side effects which include mild skin rash, minor itching, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, cough, headaches, nausea, vomiting, or sexual dysfunction. While these side effects may present discomfort, they do not typically require urgent medical care. Patients who experience these side effects should inquire if a dosage adjustment would make them more comfortable, and report all side effects to the prescribing physician.
Altace should be taken as it has been prescribed and patients should not alter their own medication. Patients who take too much medication or take doses of their medication too closely together are likely to experience an overdose, which is considered a medical emergency and should be responded to as such. Should the patient miss their usual dose, it can be taken when remembered provided there is ample time between that dose and the next dose. Otherwise the missed dose should simply be skipped and the dosing schedule should be resumed with the next scheduled dose. Overdoses can present with symptoms which may include extreme dizziness, lightheadedness, chest pain, fainting, tremors, and heart rhythm alterations.
Patients should be aware that taking additional medication while taking Altace may cause a negative interaction or may cause medications, including Altace, to lose their effectiveness. Patients should never take any new medications, prescriptions, over the counter, or herbal, without first checking with their prescribing physician. Medications with a known history with Altace include potassium supplements, lithium, diuretics, aspirin, or other NSAID pain relieving medications. Patients should be advised to avoid salt substitutes that contain potassium as well as alcoholic beverages.
