Key facts

  • Inflammation is the body's response to injury, infection, or irritation. Redness, swelling, heat, and pain are the classic signs.
  • Short-term inflammation is protective. It becomes a problem when it persists or the immune system overreacts, causing lasting tissue damage.
  • Severe or excessive inflammation is treated with corticosteroids such as dexamethasone and methylprednisolone, which suppress the immune signals driving the response.
  • Seek urgent care if inflammation comes with high fever, difficulty breathing, rapid swelling of the face or throat, or chest pain.

When the immune response needs reining in

Conditions ranging from severe allergic reactions to autoimmune flares to post-viral lung involvement can produce inflammation intense enough to cause lasting damage. In these cases, corticosteroids are the main medical tool. They suppress the immune signals driving the response rather than simply masking pain.

Not every case needs a corticosteroid. Milder, localised inflammation, a sprained joint or a minor skin irritation, often settles with rest, ice, and an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkiller. Corticosteroids are reserved for inflammation that is severe, widespread, or driven by an overactive immune system rather than a simple injury.

How inflammation is treated

Dexamethasone is a high-potency corticosteroid used for acute, severe inflammation, including serious respiratory inflammation. It featured prominently in Covid-19 care protocols for patients with significant lung involvement. Methylprednisolone is another widely used option, valued for its versatility across inflammatory conditions and its good tissue penetration.

Both fall under pain and inflammation management and are dosed according to the severity of the condition. Prolonged use carries real side-effect risks, so treatment is typically kept as short as the condition allows.

When to see a doctor

Seek urgent care if inflammation is accompanied by high fever, difficulty breathing, rapid swelling of the face or throat, or chest pain.
