Key facts

  • Meningococcal carriage means Neisseria meningitidis bacteria are present in the back of the throat without causing illness.
  • Most carriers never develop disease themselves, but they can pass the bacterium to close contacts who may be more vulnerable to it.
  • Carriage is more common among young adults in shared living settings, such as university halls and military barracks.
  • Treatment with an antibiotic such as rifampicin is used only in specific situations, mainly around a confirmed case of invasive meningococcal disease.

What carriage means

Most people who carry the bacterium never become unwell, and carriage on its own rarely causes symptoms. The concern is transmission: a carrier can pass the organism to a close contact who then develops invasive disease, which is why treatment decisions focus on protecting the people around a known case rather than treating carriage itself. Vaccination against meningococcal disease is a separate, preventive measure; it protects the vaccinated person from illness but does not clear existing throat carriage on its own.

Clearing the bacterium

Treatment is only recommended in specific situations, such as before or after a case of invasive meningococcal disease in a household or close contact. The goal is to eliminate the organism from the throat and prevent further spread.

Rifampicin is one of the established antibiotics used for meningococcal carriage clearance. Courses are short, usually just a couple of days, and completing the full course matters: stopping early can allow the bacterium to persist and continue spreading to others nearby.

When to see a doctor

If you or someone in your household has been identified as a close contact of a confirmed meningococcal case, seek medical assessment promptly.
